Householder who shot burglar acted in Self Defence
A HOUSEHOLDER who shot dead a burglar acted in self-defence, a court was told yesterday (23rd October 2011).
Raymond Andes, 39, killed unarmed Isaiah Bovell, 21, with a single bullet to the head in April but claims he only meant to scare him.
Zoe Johnson, prosecuting, told an Old Bailey jury Bovell may have gone there because of a cannabis factory inside. She added: “The main issue is if the shot was targeted.”
Andes, of Clapham, South London, who has admitted cultivating cannabis denies murder. The trial continues. To read more about this story go to: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/10/22/raider-shot-dead-in-self-defence-115875-23505475/

Homeowners Rights to Self Defence to be Made Clearer
Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has said a householder who knifes a burglar will not have committed a criminal offence under plans to clarify the law on self-defence in England. He told the BBC recently that people were entitled to use “whatever force necessary” to protect themselves and their homes, and David Cameron recently said the issue should be put “beyond doubt”. What is Self Defence?
‘What is Self Defence?’ – DVD
The aim of the DVD is to help educate people about what their legal rights to self-defence are and to help destroy the myths and misconceptions that abound in relation to self-defence. Myths and misconceptions that result in people living in fear in their own homes, their communities and in their own minds.
Ever since Tony Martin, the Norfolk farmer, was found guilty of murder for killing a burglar in 1999, and sentenced to life imprisonment (which was later replaced by a manslaughter conviction which saw him released after three years), many good, honest and law abiding people starting doubting their rights to self-defence. They believed that the legal system in this country favoured the criminal over themselves, helping to create a social atmosphere of learned helplessness in our society that still lasts to this day.
This DVD therefore, is not just an educational product. It has been designed to help set people free to live their lives with the freedom and liberty that they are entitled to. A freedom and liberty that generations of people have died for, and still die for today, and which is the foundation stone of our democratic society.
The actual reality is that it is very difficult to be found guilty of any wrongdoing if you defend yourself, others or protect your property, as the recent cases of Vincent Coke, Peter Flanagan and Cecil Coley have recently proved to us all this year.
