As many of you who know is will know, we are driven by a passion, and that is a passion to keep people safe. Like many of you I served in the armed forces where I felt my life had purpose. When I left I did many things. I sold computers, did some CP work, and worked as a Prison Officer. However, as good as these jobs were, they did little to replace the purpose that was now missing from my life since leaving the forces. It was only when I started teaching martial arts part time and working with the local Police and the local Crime Prevention Panels that I began started teaching self defence to local groups. Although the vast majority of the time we were working for free it was something that re-ignited a purpose and a passion in my life, and that purpose was the need to for keep people safe. This is a purpose and a passion that has stayed with me ever since and is the main reason and driving force behind everything we do and permeates virtually every area of my life.
Since those early days that started back in 1998 – 22 years ago now – John Steadman and I have delivered training to a wide range of organisations and individuals including: Social Services staff, Courtroom staff, Local Authority staff, Healthcare staff, NHS staff, Probation Officers, Police and Prison Officers, Transport companies, Pharmaceutical companies, Security organisations, Military personnel, Child Care Organisations and Foster Carers, and many others in between.
I have also had the pleasure and privilege of working with some of this country’s truly exceptional individuals in the field of Self Defence and Personal Safety, such as my late good friend Peter Boatman who was an absolute pioneer in the field of Self Protection and Unarmed Defensive Tactics in the UK, and whose vision and foresight changed the way the police would approach officer safety training forever.
We also became the first training organisation worldwide to develop a Trainers BTEC Level 3 Award in Physical Restraint Practice and a range of BTEC Level 2 Awards for Trainers to deliver and we are continually developing our range of Awarding Body Qualifications in this field.
I have also interviewed and worked with some of this countries greatest legal minds such as Michael Mansfield QC, Professor of Law Gary Slapper and John Wadham, whose generosity and unselfishness has allowed me to develop the legal side of what we do to a point where we probably deliver some of the most holistically legally accurate training available in the UK today, and as an Expert Witness I have been involved in a range of criminal and civil cases in court, and helped defend and support many individuals who have ended up in tribunals charged with offences that they should never have been charged with.
In short, since 1988 we have had an eventful and interesting journey. We have excelled and celebrated in our achievements and learned from our mistakes. And now we feel that it is time to go back to our roots and address something left unfinished.
That is why we have developed a BTEC Level 3 Award in Self Defence Instruction. It is an Award that takes us full circle, back to our roots in this history and lineage of where it all started. It is an Award that will bridge the gap between the occupational requirements that our BTEC Awards in Physical Restraint provide with regard to occupational requirements and the
In short, we are going to provide you with a qualification that is not just a BTEC Level 3 Award. It is a qualification based on 22 years of training, study, experience and reflection.
A Qualification with ‘Safety’ Built in.
It is a qualification designed to keep you, as a Self Defence Trainer, safe. Safe from criminal and civil prosecution and litigation.
It is a qualification designed to keep those you train safe. Safe from harm and fear.
What are the benefits to you?
Well, for one you wont have to go through 22 years of study, training, experience and reflection to obtain this Award. You wont have to make the mistakes we made but can learn from them and our successes.
You will be able to have possibly the only Nationally Recognised Awarding Body Qualification in Self Defence Instruction available worldwide, which means that you will have passed a recognised learning and assessment process to attain a unique qualification with the worlds largest Awarding Body specifically written for Self Defence Instruction.
Totally Inclusive Training
The award has also been designed to be totally inclusive. That means it respects what you teach within your respective systems and does not impose any technique on you as a trainer. You will be left to decide what you think works best provided that you can justify that within the framework provided within the qualification.
So if you are a martial artist and teach a form of defence based on karate, ju-jitsu, krav maga, ju-jitsu, choi kwang do, tae-kwon do, etc., then you will be free to develop your own techniques based around your own syllabus for your own students.
If you are not a martial artist but belong to any other organisation that teaches and promotes any form of unarmed defensive tactics or personal protection training then this BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award would be a beneficial qualification to have in your educational portfolio to demonstrate that you have achieved a formerly recognised level of evidential-based learning and assessment.
